Each maze also randomly includes a hat or honey pot, which serve the dual purpose of awarding points and providing Bentley with the ability to defeat specific enemies.

Gems start out at one point each, and increase up to 99 points each. If three or more lives remain, he says "BYE" if two lives still remain, the quotation is "OH NO" if one life is left, it is "OUCH" and finally, for the last lost life (which ends the game), he says "#?!", so as to imitate an obscenity. If Bentley Bear is touched, he "cries out" in a distinctive manner with the use of a cartoonish word balloons. Enemies traverse the maze in two methods: those that track Bentley, and those that do not. Likewise if the last available gem is collected by the enemy, the player also loses the last gem bonus.Įnemies can be avoided by use of the maze and its constructs, or by making Bentley jump over opponents with the jump button, in some cases also allowing him to stun them. Any gems collected by the enemies also result in a lower obtainable score for that screen. With two exceptions, if touched by the enemies he will lose one of his lives. While collecting gems, there are a number of enemies that try to stop Bentley Bear as well as collect the gems for themselves. Gems are collected by simply walking over them, and a bonus is given upon collection of the last gem. The player can also skip some castles and acquire additional lives and points by using secret warps activated by making Bentley Bear jump at special locations.Ī trackball and "jump" button are used for controlling Bentley Bear's motions.

When all gems in a castle have been collected, the player moves on to the next castle. The three-letter initials of the player with the highest score are used to form the first level's castle structure. Each of the 37 trimetric-projected castles consists of a maze of hallways filled with gems and bonus objects, and also includes stairs, elevators and tunnels that the player can use as shortcuts. Everyone loves the "planking" of the back door area.Crystal Castles has nine levels with four castles each, and a tenth level which features a single castle - the clearing of which ends the game. Also, the back door is missing, oh joy! In the end, I hope to have a nice looking game, it won't be perfect, but I'll have the option to make it perfect in the future should I ever decide to go that route. It's best to have a plan when doing these restores, so I decided to just fix the cabinet, replace the control panel and marquee artwork, then repair and replace the poorly functioning trackball. Since this cabinet is going to be for playing, and not for marveling at, I decided to clean it up the best I could, but try to keep costs down. I believe the side art and kick panel graphics are available also, but that would put this project's budget much higher than I am willing to go at this time. I looked online and found the control panel overlay and the marquee had both been reproduced. There is also a split in the front panel just above the coin door.

The control panel and marquee are both cracked and flaking badly, and the bottom sides of the cabinet have both water damage and smashed corners. The front kick plate is faded and has two lock bar holes. Sadly, all of the artwork on this cabinet has been damaged in some way. This cabinet is considered by many to be one of the best looking of the early Atari games. The game actually works, so that's a major relief. This was offered to me by brew_miester on the Village forum. After finishing up the Asteroids Deluxe, I was looking for a nice simple project.
